We check for oral cancer at your examination appointment. Oral cancer can be found on several parts of the mouth including the lips, surface of the tongue, the roof of the mouth, the lips, the salivary gland, the tonsils and the gums.
Oral cancer has symptoms but sometimes can go unnoticed which is why it is important to attend regularly for check ups, even if you have no teeth or dentures, as we can check your mouth and if we see anything we can act as fast as possible.
Symptoms of oral cancer are:
- mouth ulcers that don’t go away (sometimes can be painful)
- unexplained lumps in the neck and mouth
- changes in speech
- white or red patches in the mouth
- strange feelings in the tongue and lip
- difficulty to heal after extractions
Certain factors can increase your risk of developing mouth cancer, these include drinking alcohol, smoking and using tobacco products and if you are infected with HPV (the human papilloma virus).
We recommend that you visit us every six months for your routine dental examination, at this visit we will check your mouth, you will notice that your Dentist will feel your neck as part of this examination. If we do see something we will send a referral through to Aberdeen where they will be able to see if it something to be concerned about. Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world.
It is important to look after your mouth by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and by ensuring a low alcohol rate and avoiding tobacco products.
